How to key green screen on a Mac without a Nuke licence

The best keyers live inside software that costs more than the Mac. The gap in the middle is real, and it can be closed.

The serious keying tools live behind serious price tags. A Nuke licence costs more than the Mac it runs on, and its keyers, IBK and Keylight and friends, are a big part of why facilities pay it. If you cut in Premiere, Resolve, or Final Cut and green screen work arrives a few times a month, that maths never closes. You need the key, not the seat.

Here is what a Mac can actually do without one, in the order worth trying.

Start with what you already have

Resolve’s 3D keyer and Delta Keyer are the best free chroma keyers on the platform, full stop. The free Resolve tier includes them, and on a well-lit screen with controlled edges they hold up. If your plates are clean, start here and you may be done.

Final Cut’s built-in keyer is genuinely good at automatic pulls on friendly footage, and falls off fast when you need to intervene, because the controls underneath are limited.

Premiere’s Ultra Key works until the edges matter, and then it makes you choose which detail to sacrifice. The Ultra Key guide covers how far you can push it.

All three share one ceiling: they are chroma keyers. They decide transparency by color distance, so hair, motion blur, and glass, the mixed-pixel cases, are where the sliders stop helping. If your shots avoid those, an NLE keyer plus care is a complete answer.

Closing the gap without the licence

When the mixed pixels do matter, the missing piece is not more sliders. It is a different kind of keyer. It predicts the true foreground color and a linear alpha for every pixel rather than thresholding green, which is the property that keeps hair and blur intact. The workflow is deliberately boring:

  1. Drop your shots, or a folder of them, into the app.
  2. The queue processes each one into Matte, FG, and premultiplied Processed passes in linear EXR, plus a Comp preview.
  3. Take ProRes 4444 with alpha back into your NLE, or the EXR passes into Fusion or After Effects if the shot needs comp work.

What you still do not get

A keyer is not a compositor. Nuke earns its price on everything around the key: proper despill toolkits in context, light wraps, edge extends, deep merges, and a paint and roto environment for the shots where nothing automatic works. Fusion inside Resolve covers a surprising amount of that for free, and you should learn it, but nobody should tell you a free stack replaces a Nuke pipeline. It replaces the keying half of one, for the class of shots most editors actually face.

Common questions

Is the free Resolve tier really enough for the keyers?

Yes. The Delta Keyer and Fusion both ship in the free tier. Studio adds noise reduction and the Magic Mask, among other things, and the Magic Mask is roto, not keying: a different tool with a different failure mode.

Does an Apple Silicon MacBook actually handle 4K plates?

Yes, with time proportional to the machine. The engine scales inference around a native 2048 by 2048 backbone, and the batch queue exists so the wait happens while you do something else.

How do I avoid fringing when I bring the key back into my NLE?
