What to do when Ultra Key eats your edges
Everyone finds the same three sliders and the same trade: keep the hair and keep the green, or lose both.

Ultra Key is a decent chroma keyer with default settings tuned for footage nobody actually shoots. On real material it develops a signature appetite: it eats edges. Hair gets a crunchy outline, shoulders shimmer frame to frame, and the space between strands fills with grey fringe. So you open Matte Cleanup, and the education begins.
The sliders, and what they cost
Choke shrinks the matte inward. It removes the green fringe by removing the subject’s own edge with it. Past small values, ears get thinner and hair gets a haircut.
Soften blurs the matte. The crunch goes away because everything goes away; the edge becomes a uniform mush that ignores where the real edge was sharp or soft.
Pedestal and Tolerance reshape the transparency curve. These are the honest controls, and they are one curve for the whole frame. The setting that holds the hairline lets the badly lit corner of the screen bleed through, and the setting that cleans the corner kills the hairline.
Worth trying before you give up
- Sample the screen color from a spot near your subject’s head, not from the brightest patch of the screen. The edge you care about is fighting the screen color nearest to it.
- Set everything in Matte Cleanup to zero and fix as much as you can with Pedestal and Tolerance alone. Cleanup is a bandage layer; it should be the last few percent, not the strategy.
- Garbage matte tighter than feels necessary. Every wrinkle and light stand you exclude is slack you can give back to the edge.
- If the screen is uneven, split the frame into two or three masked instances of the effect with different samples. Ugly, effective, and standard practice.
On a well-lit screen with controlled hair, this gets you to acceptable. Some shots simply end there.
The ceiling you are hitting
The frustrating part is that the trade never goes away, and that is not a Premiere bug. A color-distance keyer has one lever: how aggressively to map green-ness to transparency. Fine hair and screen contamination occupy the same range on that lever, so protecting one damages the other. Every chroma keyer, including the expensive ones, plays this game with more knobs.
The way out is a tool that does not use color distance at all. Where the app does not help
If your Mac has an Intel chip, it will not run; the engine needs Apple Silicon. It is also an extra render in the pipeline rather than a live effect on the timeline, so a two-second gag you have already keyed acceptably is not worth re-routing. It earns its place on the shots where Ultra Key has you circling the same three sliders for the fourth pass.
Common questions
Would After Effects and Keylight do better?
Keylight gives you finer control over the same fundamental trade, plus proper screen mattes and per-channel tuning. Better tools, same lever. If you already own it and know it, it buys you range. It does not buy you out of the compromise.
Why do my edges flicker between frames?
The matte is re-thresholded per frame, so sensor noise at the edge flips pixels across the threshold from frame to frame. Softening hides it by blurring everything. A reconstruction-based key is steadier because small noise moves the answer slightly rather than flipping it.
Is the fringe green or grey?
